What You Need to Know about Plastic Cord Locks

Using elastic cord ropes are a great way to keep something secured exactly where you need it. But for extra tight fastening, plastic cord locks are a great option. Although you may think you haven't heard of cord locks before, the chances are actually good that you've seen or even used them many times. Here are a few facts about cord locks and how you might find them to be useful.

Cord Lock

What Is a Cord Lock?

Literally speaking, a cord lock is a lock that holds a cord in place. This cord may be a simple string, a thin rope, an insulated rope, an elastic cord (bungee), or any other thin and pliable material. A cord lock holds that material in a certain position in order to keep it secure and in place. They're often cylinder shaped with an end that is pushed in to release the cord and allow it to move.

How Do They Work?

Cord locks are a simple mechanism. You can see most of the components just by looking at the lock. There's a hole on the side of the lock where a spring is visible. There is also a hole in the top button, or plunger. When the plunger is depressed, the holes on the barrel of the lock and on the plunger align, allowing the cord to move. But once the plunger is released, the holes aren't aligned anymore and the mechanism locks back down on the cord so that it's fastened in place.

Where Are They Used?

Cord locks are typically used to secure small items. They're often used on sleeping bag stuff sacks and other utility bags like laundry sacks and mesh bags. They're also often used on luggage that has a drawstring compartment. They're useful on cold weather clothing like jackets, coats, hooded sweatshirts, gloves, and mittens to help keep snow and wind out. They may also be used to secure window blinds in a certain position.

What Are the Benefits?

Cord locks make using all these types of items much easier because you don't have to worry about bags spilling their contents. They also help keep you much more comfortable in wet weather without constant adjustment. The locks come in different sizes, colors, and designs, and are an inexpensive way to hold things in place.
