What Is a Cord Lock?

Literally speaking, a cord lock is a lock that holds a cord in place. This cord may be a simple string, a thin rope, an insulated rope, an elastic cord, or any other thin and pliable material. A cord lock holds that material in a certain position in order to keep it secure and in place. They're often cylinder shaped with an end that is pushed in to release the cord and allow it to move.

How Do They Work?

Cord locks are a simple mechanism. You can see most of the components just by looking at the lock. There's a hole on the side of the lock where a spring is visible. There is also a hole in the top button, or plunger. When the plunger is depressed, the holes on the barrel of the lock and on the plunger align, allowing the cord to move. But once the plunger is released, the holes aren't aligned anymore and the mechanism locks back down on the cord so that it's fastened in place.

Cord locks are typically used to secure small items. They're often used on sleeping bag stuff sacks and other utility bags like laundry sacks and mesh bags. They're also often used on luggage that has a drawstring compartment.
