What’s in a Name?

Arts and crafts is no longer just a choice at summer camp when you don’t feel like boating. Crafting is a serious pastime in the United States. Massive box stores fill their shelves with all the supplies you need to keep your creative mind satisfied. People are passionate about making scrapbook pages, crocheting their own slippers, and beading personalized jewelry.

Paracord survival bracelets are another project that has come full circle and landed squarely back in the mainstream creative mind. These bracelets serve two purposes:

  1. They make a strapping fashion statement with wide cord and plastic buckles of all sizes.
  2. They are a survival strategy, for when unbraided, the cord is strong enough for you to climb in an emergency.

Bracelets like this and many others feature quick, easy-release plastic buckles. These buckles come in many sizes and styles allowing you to further the look of your bracelet with creativity.

Sizes

You’ll find three main sizes of plastic side release buckles. They range from ¾ inch (20 mm) to 1 ½ inch (38 mm). You’ll want to match the size of your buckles to the weight of your cord for the best look.

Styles

Depending on the purpose of your project, and how easily you want to be able to take it on or off, you can choose from a variety of styles.

Double release - short

This buckle has shorter prongs and are more secure, as they take more simultaneous pressure to release. As such, they are essentially child proof for small kids. This is a nice feature if you have a child who needs to wear a bracelet for medical reasons.

Double release - long

This buckle’s prongs are a bit longer allowing for an easier release with less pressure needed.

Single adjusting buckle

This style has one slider hole. Contrary to the name, you won’t actually be adjusting this buckle once your project is complete. These are good for bracelets, keychains, and more.

Double adjusting buckle

This style has two slider holes and does have the ability for adjustment once your project is complete. These are good for dog collars, backpacks, and gear straps. Accessories like built-in whistles are also available if you’re making survival gear.

Whether you are crafting just for fun or you’re serious about being prepared with survival gear for the future, make your own supplies with side release buckles.
