The Four Most Common Types of Webbing

Webbing has many applications, including aerospace, military gear, and commercial webbing. When choosing webbing for your needs, there are four common types. Polypropylene, polyester, Kevlar, and nylon webbing are the four types of materials to consider. Each one comes with its pros and cons.

Polypropylene Webbing Strengths and Weaknesses

·         Lighter than other materials and does not absorb a lot of water weight.

·         Can float and resist mildew.

·         Resists excessive damage from stains from oil and grease.

·         Weaker than other webbing materials.

·         Less resistant to abrasion and has a low melting point.

Polyester Webbing Strengths and Weaknesses

·         Poly webbing is popular in the following applications: pet leashes, outdoor gear, handbags, luggage, sporting goods, and military gear.

·         Offers a wide range of strengths and widths.

·         UV-stable and does not absorb water.

·         Does not stretch, so it’s often used for backpack straps and hammock suspension.

·         Resistant to abrasion.

·         Not as strong as nylon webbing.

Kevlar Webbing Strengths and Weaknesses

·         Popular uses include tree strap alternatives and bulletproof vests.

·         Provides an excellent weight-to-strength ratio.

·         Resistant to heat and abrasion.

·         Packs down small and is lightweight.

·         It can become damaged when exposed to UV light, so it’s recommended for nighttime use only. It will lose strength after just forty hours of sun exposure.

Nylon Webbing Strengths and Weaknesses

·         Popular uses include climbing safety equipment and backpack straps.

·         Available in various styles and colors.

·         Extremely durable and elastic.

·         UV-resistant and handles high levels of sun exposure.

·         Absorbs water and adds to the weight of the material.
